Answering Exam Paper Questions
Use Fig. 1 and your own knowledge to answer the following questions. 1 (a) (i) Identify three interpretations that can be made about the methods used by consumers to access published media material.
1 (a) (i): 1. Published media on our phones is the second highest at 64%, only 3% behind print media
2. Print media is the highest at 67% of published media
3. Tablets are the least used platform for published media at 22%, this is 45% lower than the most used platform for media which is at 67% for print media
(ii) Identify the percentage of consumers who accessed published media material in print format. Explain one reason for this percentage. Percentage: 67% .
Books, magazines, newspapers and comic books are forms of print media. Figure 1 only uses data from people 15+ years of age. However, due to the advancements of technology, younger children under 15 would use digital forms of media more, so this means if it was for everyone in GB then phones would have the highest percentage. Plus, older people read more print media like newspapers so this means that print media is the highest platform for media.
(b) Explain one reason for the difference between tablet consumption of published media and one other format.
the consumption of media on a tablet is 22% while the consumption of media on a phone is 64%. A reason why consumption of media on tablets is lower on phones (42% difference) is because phones are a portable blackbox device that we can use for everything thanks to technological convergence (text, call, listen to music, use the internet...) and tablets are not as portable because they are bigger. Therefore, phones are more useful and tablets are usually used at home occasionally, they are not needed as much because a phone can do everything and more than what a tablet can.
Use Fig. 2 and your own knowledge to answer the following questions. 2
(a) Identify and explain three patterns in the way audiences listen to radio in the UK.
1. 89% of the UK population listen to radio every week and 61% listen to digital radio every week. I think this might be because lots of people listen to radios in the car or at work. Others might listen to the radio through their phones or technology when they are bored.
2. 41% of 15-24 year olds get updates about their favourite radio station or presenter and 30% of adults. This might be because 15-24 year olds use more technology than adults and use social media more than adults. Older adults might also not be bothered about updates from their favourite TV station or presenter and they don't use much technology and social media.
3. Out of 510 million, 72% listen through DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting), 9% listened through Digital TV and 19% through the WWW. I think this is because most people here listen through their radios like in their cars or at work, others will listen using their TV at home while multitasking and a few might listen through their websites but not many do. Because of how often we use cars this might be why DAB is more used.
(b) Identify two social media channels that radio producers might use to target 15-24 year-old listeners to promote a new radio programme. Explain why each would be an effective channel to target these listeners.
Instagram is a good way to target 15-24 year olds and promote a new radio programme because most teenagers use Instagram and the platform is targeted towards teenagers and young adults specifically. The radio producers could take photos and short videos to promote.
Tiktok would also be a good social media platform to target 15-24 year olds to promote a new radio programme as it is one of the biggest social media platforms right now and it is based around short videos and towards teens. The radio producers could use a short Tiktok.
